Destination Marketing Advisor (Tourism)

Richard George, PhD, is a specialist in tourism and destination marketing with over 28 years working in higher education, applied research, and consulting for tourism businesses and government bodies. He currently leads academic programmes at UeCampus (UK/UAE) and has formerly served as Course Director for Hospitality and Business Management at the London College of Contemporary Arts (LCCA). He was also an Associate Professor of Marketing at the University of Cape Town (UCT), where he established and led the Tourism Research Unit, which provides consultancy and research support to tourism organisations and public sector entities.

Richard has extensive experience leading and supporting a diverse portfolio of destination marketing, tourism development, and branding projects, including major government-commissioned strategies and applied research. His consulting engagements comprise the “Go Limpopo! Vision 2030” Destination Marketing Strategy (Tourism, Trade & Investment), the Limpopo Tourism Development and Growth Strategy, destination rebranding and perception studies for Tshwane, economic-impact and tourism development initiatives for the City of Cape Town, as well as numerous strategic and research projects for Cape Town Tourism. He has also contributed strategic insights to official destination travel guides, FIFA World Cup tourism readiness assessments, and domestic tourism development frameworks.

In addition to his consulting work, Richard is an internationally published author and editor, with books and peer-reviewed research focused on tourism marketing, destination competitiveness, risk and image, and sustainable tourism development. His expertise integrates market research, stakeholder engagement, brand positioning, and evidence-based strategy development, equipping him to effectively lead complex, multi-stakeholder destination marketing initiatives. Grounded in both global best practices and substantial hands-on experience with emerging and established destinations, Richard brings both academic depth and hands-on delivery to every destination he works with.
